Bath: world heritage city

The world heritage city of Bath and the countryside surrounding it are quite simply beautiful. Bath is a popular stop for tourists visting Britain. For more than 2000 years Bath's fortune has been linked to its hot springs and tourism. The Romans developed a complex of baths and a temple to Sulis-Minerva. Today, however Bath's Georgian architecture is almost as important an attraction.

Attractions

Throughout the 18th century Bath was the most fashionable destination for English high society. Aristocrats came here to gossip, gamble and of course, "take the waters". Like Florence in Italy, Bath is an architectural jewel. As in Florence there is a much-photographed shop-lined bridge. The buildings are made of bath stone whose honey colour really comes into its own when the sun is shining. Some of the most impressive bath stone buildings are Bath Abbey,The Circus and The Royal Crescent. With the beautiful architecture and pedestrianised centre with buskers and strollers no-one can deny Bath's exceptional beauty.

Getting around

Bath was designed for wandering around. However, although the centre is compact the tangle of streets, arcades and squares can be a little confusing. To easily find your way around pop into the Tourist Information Centre to pick up a map and tips for a walking tour. Alternatively give your legs a rest and hop on an open top bus for a guided tour of all the attractions.
